Maps & Navigation

As a visual person and a pseudo-geek, I use Google Maps a lot to plan my travels because:

  1. You can find details on places you want to go, such as contact/event info, reviews, and even price range for tickets/meals.

  2. You know where you are (or where you're headed). As someone with zero sense of direction, it's useful to find your current location - just click on the four-pointed round navigation icon on the map, or use street view to check for landmarks.

  3. You can find info on transportation options from one place that you have marked/saved to another, including trip duration, and sometimes even how much each trip may cost you. Although some info stated may be outdated (so doublecheck with other sources!), they are usually reliable.

  4. You can save maps to be viewed offline - remember to download the maps first though!

  5. You can share your custom-made maps with fellow travellers! 🙌

  6. You can use the maps for other things that may be useful for your travels.

Having said that, a virtual map does have its downsides, e.g.:
  1. You can't download maps for every city.

  2. Offline maps take up a considerable amount of space in your device (usually over 100mb, depending on how detailed the map is). This will be an issue for phones with limited space and may be a bit 'heavy' for older/more basic smartphones.

My Maps

I've customised a few online maps, which I've embedded below in alphabetical order, by country. You may use/share them if you like, or get ideas from the maps made by others too.

Notes:
  1. When I travel, I prefer having both online and offline navigational aid - I would use my online maps as well as the printed version, just in case.

  2. Eateries marked in the maps reflect my dietary restrictions and my travel budget.
