Stuff I Made/Did

I have performed poetry and have done a bit of theatre when I was younger, but in all honesty I would rather support performers (e.g. working behind the scenes and organising/attending shows) than become one.

In my childhood my father (who is very much into theatre and classical music) introduced my siblings and I to different forms of performing arts by bringing us to shows when they're available and affordable, expose us to musicals by singing the songs, explain a bit about music history etc.

As an adult, I try to watch theatre and other performances whenever I can, although the genres I lean towards have changed/evolved quite a bit heheh.

While my father and siblings are artistically more music-oriented (they sing and/or play instruments), I would rather focus my creative energy and express myself through visual arts/crafts, like my mom. But even though I love music and listen to it a lot (some might say even too much), it's not something I can commit to or seriously pursue. I still try to get myself involved and/or contribute where I can, though.

JALAN DALAM

JALAN DALAM are collective of creatives on a mission to develop the arts scene in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It's a small group with big dreams, acting as a platform for expression of diverse voices through performing arts - spoken word, music, storytelling etc.

When I was with them, we actively hosted monthly open mic sessions, but we were also involved in [MY]MORY, a multi-genre arts exhibition in collaboration with Studio Mekar, where artists share their creations influenced by the things they remember from the past. 



Carthreena

[Update: Disbanded in 2020]

Carthreena is the first Malaysian band that I was excited to watch live and I became their crew in 2019. The members of this band are: Nhajril @ Ayin on Vocal/Guitar, Shazwan on Guitar (lead), Naz Mikanaz on Bass, and art:tech @ Atek on Drums.

I first heard about them through their current drummer, art:tech, who happens to be a multidisciplinary artist I'd been following for a while. At the time, I've never heard of the term 'post-hardcore', so out of curiousity, I decided to play some of their songs on Spotify... and oh boy am I glad I did!, because their first album is truly love at first listen.

According to them, their music is influenced by Finch, Saosin, A Day To Remember, Taking Back Sunday, Silverstein, Blessthefall, Muse, Foo Fighters, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Breaking Benjamin, 30 Seconds To Mars, and many others. I wrote a review for their album Breathe For Tomorrow - check it out!

Kyoto was once upon a time Japan's capital, before Tokyo. It is a charming historical city well-known for its temples, shrines, and eyegasmic landscapes. My family and I went to Kyoto on the same day we went to Nara . Our tour group spent (only!) the morning here though, which is obviously not enough. The trip was a nice teaser for another trip to Kyoto, I suppose.

Travel Info: Travelling While Muslim

Travelling is highly encouraged in Islam  if done with good intentions, such as to learn more about the beauty of God's creations and to perform the hajj (pilgrimage to Mecca). However, travelling as a Muslim (or maybe as someone who obviously looks Muslim?) can be a bit tricky sometimes because there are certain things we may have to pay a bit more attention to. Manga Review: Mayonaka no Waltz

The Basics Title: Mayonaka no Waltz / Midnight Waltz / まよなかのワルツ Format: One Shot Release: 2017 Genres: Romance, Supernatural, Vampire, Dance, Josei Status: Finished Synopsis: A girl makes the acquaintance of a monstrous creature who believes himself to be quite human. Source: Anilist.co My Review This is a oneshot comic that is part of a collection of manga by Nagabe that features anthromorphic animals. I have to admit, this theme is not something I am used to reading, but it was suggested to me by my friend Nana (with a content warning), so I was intrigued. This was a short read, but it made me contemplate a lot on the idea of identity... as a human being who is uncomfortable in the skin they were born in, as someone who struggles with impostor syndrome, as someone who always feels out of place etc. I appreciate manga (or anything really) that hands me questions to reflect on and/or leads me to feel stuff, and this does both.  I wonder if I'll ever find answers to all the question...
