Penang Sketchwalk! [2020, January]

Artworks by a few KL Sketch Nation members - namely Hakym, Jerome, and Syah Daud - were being exhibited at LOOP Hotel, so as part of the launch, we had a sketchwalk activity around the vicinity of the hotel.

Of course, a road trip was in order, so the KLSN team went to see the sights, sounds, and tastes of Penang!

Day 1

After having our breakfast at a meeting point (McD), we set off our trip along the north-south highway.

I love the sights along the way while chatting with my fellow carmates.

After a few hours of driving, we stopped by Laksa Telur Bersarang Cafe Setinggan in Ipoh for brunch because most of us were hungry. I can't have laksa because of my allergies (it usually has belacan i.e. preserved shrimp sauce), but the others said the laksa was okay la.

We drove across via the main bridge. The sky was so blue! <3

After reaching Penang and while waiting for the others to arrive (some had to make toilet stops lol), my carmates, we decided to explore the area a bit on foot. We spotted Beryl's Chocolate Story on Love Lane nearby, so we checked it out because we were curious.

No we totally weren't trying to find shade on a hot day, what made you think that? Heheh. [Source: Kitta Tsuyoshi]

It's basically a chocolate store but it's designed to be a museum of sorts (without an entrance fee, haha). It was interesting seeing the process of chocolate-making, I didn't know chocolate was made from fermented cacao beans!

After everyone arrived and we checked into our hotel, we had late lunch at Nasi Kandar Kapitan.

Food time!

Ready with my sketchbook, and waiting for our meals with a refreshing coconut hehe

After lunch, we decided to just explore the city on our own and meet up again for dinner.

I went back to the hotel because I wasn't feeling well (I had food poisoning so I didn't have much appetite), while the others separated to do different things - some took touristy pictures with art installations and murals, some went cycling, and others just walked around chatting and catching up.

At around 8pm, we met up again and had dinner/supper at Pasembur Gurney Drive. It's basically a food court with an assortment of cuisine but it was the liveliest one I've ever been too - one of the stalls especially so! They played discotheque music from the olden days (ABBA etc), with colorfu LED lights around the stall. The uncle manning the stall also cut up his food (rojak) following the beat of the song, so it was pretty entertaining heheh. The food here was okay, but 10/10 atmosphere - definitely  worth the experience!

Day 2

We started our day with breakfast at Roti Canai Transfer Road. It's packed (as expected) but I found the food just okay. It's not terrible, but not tablesmacking good ykwim? Hehe. The atmosphere is pretty lively so it wasn't a bad experience.

We then drove to LOOP Hotel to check out PEEPart exhibition, curated by Nasran Sairan.

I really like the concept of using hotel to as an art exhibition tbh.

Our friend Jerome's watercolor painting. Beautiful isn't it?

Then we walked to Leith neighborhood street, and sketched the area.

After a few hours of sitting in the shade sketching buildings (well I finished mine pretty early so half of the time I walked around checking out other people's work hehe) we had lunch at Line Clear Nasi Kandar. The line was definitely not clear (the queue was super long haha), but when we finally managed got seated, I had a good time eating a nice hot meal with my friends.

Our final stop in Penang was Teochew Chendol, where we had afternoon tea. :)

Can't go to Penang without having cendol!

And so ends our foodventure! We then went back to the hotel, got our things, and took the ferry back to mainland.
