Manga Review: Gokushufudou

I generally avoid ongoing manga because I cannot handle things without closure, but since my friend  N highly recommended this title (with the promise that the chapters can be read by themselves rather than a continuous storyline), I figured I might as well try.

Oh boy, what a wonderful read this was!

The Basics

  • Title: 極主夫道, Gokushufudō, The Way of the House Husband
  • Author: Kousuke Oono
  • Release: February 23, 2018
  • Volumes: 7 (ongoing)
  • Genre: Comedy / Seinen / Slice of Life
  • Synopsis: A Japanese manga about a retired yakuza member Tatsu working as a full-time househusband for his hardworking, successful wife... He was the fiercest member of the yakuza, a man who left countless underworld legends in his wake. They called him “the Immortal Dragon.” But one day he walked away from it all to walk another path—the path of the househusband! The curtain rises on this cozy yakuza comedy!

My Review

This manga just came out this year - another issue for me initially, which made me extra cautious about starting to read it - but oh boy is it worth the risk of agonising over 'cliffhangers' (in which there are none, I'll have you know hehe).

Despite my initial hesitance, I finished all 15 chapters that are already released in one sitting, with tears in my eyes from stifling LOLs, feeling all warm and fuzzy inside.

Although there isn't much plot to delve into, the character design and the way they are portrayed is multi-dimensional and even wholesome - far from how the yakuza world perhaps is in reality, but an interesting take nonetheless.

Really looking forward to the future chapters!

Note in 2023: The manga has been adapted to live-action and even anime, so I believe it's definitely worth checking out!
